Well--
The tradition of Dakk and Eyhrit's race is very very strict. If you are to love someone, you have to go through a ceremony together before you can express any of your feelings to them. This is like a more thorough, binding, and PAINFUL version of a wedding. Strange, too. Such a recession requires a dagger blessed by a High Shaman of their religion, a chalice of the same blessings, and a certain mineral that, once burnt, becomes a coal that never cools. All these items were lost in the destruction of their planet, and UK managed to recruit a good number of the dead souls of Dakk and Eyhrit's race so that the religion has never died.

If Dakk were to express any sort of love to Maria in the presence of these spirits, he'd most certainly be cursed.
And going back to the dead planet JUST to get these items might just prove futile.
